In this course on DVD, CD, or audio download, you will be introduced to the six theories that have had perhaps the greatest influence in the field of human development including Freud's Psychodynamic Theory, Erikson's Psycho-Social Theory and Piaget's Cognitive-Development Theory. Erik Erikson’s (1958, 1963) psychosocial development theory proposes that our personality develops through eight stages, from infancy to old age. He argued that social experience was valuable throughout life, with each stage recognizable by the specific conflict we encounter between our psychological needs and the surrounding social environment. Human development, as an approach, is concerned with what I take to be the basic development idea: namely, advancing the richness of human life, rather than the richness of the economy in which human beings live, which is only a part of it. That is, I think, the basic focus of the human development approach.
